A Letter from Your Congressman
Dear Friends,
As you many know, this January the United States began
the transition from analog to exclusively digital broadcasting
of free public television channels. At midnight on February
17, 2009, all full-power television stations in the United
States will stop broadcasting in analog and switch to 100%
digital broadcasting. The transition from analog to digital
television represents the most significant advancement of
television technology since color TV was introduced. Digital
broadcasting promises to provide a clearer picture, more
programming options, and will free up airwaves for use by
emergency responders. Analog TVs receive UHF or VHF signals,
commonly through an antenna or "bunny ears." If
you own a television with a digital tuner or subscribe to
a cable, satellite or other pay TV service, you will likely
not be effected by the transition to digital broadcasting.
To ease this transition Congress created the TV Converter
Box Coupon Program for households wishing to keep using
their analog TV sets after February 17, 2009. The program
allows U.S. households to obtain up to two coupons, each
worth $40, that can be applied toward the cost of converter
boxes. There is a limited supply of these coupons, so act
soon if you need one. To learn more about the transtion
and get converter box coupons please visit one of our offices:

Upcoming Community Service and Events:
SCORE, the Service
Corps of Retired Executives, is an opportunity for
business executives to be involved in the business community
and to share
some of their hard-earned business expertise with other small
business
owners. SCORE is currently recruiting for members to assist
in their program
to counsel small businesses located in Merced County. Executives
join by
simply showing and interest and making themselves available
at various times
to offer counseling to small business owners. If
you would like to find out more about joining the Merced
SCORE Chapter,
please contact Peter Fluetsch, 722-1541. |

Welcome Center is Looking for
Volunteers!
Friendly, outgoing individuals are needed!
If you enjoy working with the public and sharing your
knowledge about the City of Merced and the State of California,
your help is needed to volunteer in the Welcome Center
and at special events.
The California Welcome Center is dedicated
to serving California's guests and residents. The Welcome
Center provides visitor information for our surrounding
area as well as information about the state of California.
Maps, brochures and travel ideas are available at each
Welcome Center. Merced is fortunate to have one of only
ten such centers in California. Housed in the Merced Conference
and Visitors Bureau, located at 710 West16th Street, the
Welcome Center is a popular stopping point for visitors
and residents for information about things to do and places
to go. The Welcome Center is open from 8:30am –
5:00 pm seven days per week excluding major holidays.
Weekday and weekend volunteers are needed.
Hours are flexible. If you are interested
in volunteering, please contact Melyssa Laughlin at 209-384-2791.

Do
you have a old flag that's laying around and you don't know
what to do with it? Then send it to us! We will properly
dispose of it according to the law.
The Kitchen Table
Gang Trust can retire your tattered, worn out and frayed
American flags.
Just send your flags to
the non-profit Kitchen Table Gang Trust, 42922 Avenue 12,
Madera, CA 93638-8866 and we will dispose of your flags
in a proper and dignified manner with full honors and dignity
pursuant to the United States Flag Code Section 8K (PL93-344).
The Kitchen Table Gang
(formed 15 years ago) is a "rag-tag" bunch of
patriotic military types helping hospitalized veterans and
soldiers overseas.
For more information, contact
Charles Taliaferro ctaliaferro@kitchentablegang.org
Our flag retirement ceremonies
are held on Flag Day, June 14th each year and are conducted
by an all volunteer military honor guard. The Kitchen Table
Gang Trust also has a nationally recognized educational
program for our young people and students, teaching them
the history, traditions and respect for our national emblem.
What does it cost? Nothing!
But donations are greatly appreciated and allows us to continue
and even expand this program.
